Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Well I decided to make my own cover for the crank nut - the welding is on the outside for a change so best not looked at too closely.. https://i.imgur.com/nHBW4UFh.jpg So when I get fed up of 'alloy work' I revert to the electrics and making up the new loom - it's a little more confusing than just a...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Alloy - that wondrous light material that's soon easy to work with.....yeah right! So I have a sheet of 3mm alloy to make up the covers for the fan belt and primary drive, also various other bits that always seem to stop up. Firstly there is the matter of the front mudguard, with the disk brake fork...

Re: Enfield Himalayan?

Not got one myself but had a long chat with an owner at a local bike event. I never expect anyone who has shelled out hard earned for an honest opinion; you have to wait ‘till they have sold a bike on then you may get a better balanced viewpoint. Frame designed by Harris Engineering (remember them.....

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Sometimes things don’t go my way.... I’ve been trying to work on the wiring loom so I can match together the new motor requirements to the existing loom without needing to remake the whole thing. Sadly I’m admitting defeat, most of the loom is showing high resistance and chopping back from the conne...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Progress update:- Not much to report as I’ve been in foreign lands doing the Hamm Rally (Damn good it was too). However, whilst I was away the new Cush drive rubbers arrived so I have stripped down the rear wheel. The bearings are all good and so are the brake shoes (although they are likely to be r...

Re: Hamm 2018 Rally

Why is it always just before the Hamm rally......... It happens to me every year just before the annual event, something will go wrong with the bike. So last week old Sluggy got pinched from outside the house, local kids pushed him into the woods and tried to start the motor. Obviously they failed m...

Slow progress, but I keep inching forwards. Back end reworked https://i.imgur.com/v9nKoOj.jpg Front brake. As I mentioned before I have never seen this type of disk brake on an Enfield, the handlebar cluster with built in master cylinder are ruined and replacements unavailable so I shall have to use...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Progress update: I’ve been using the new bike as a test bed for fitting a disk brake to old Sluggy(1), and it was time to transfer the setup. Upon dismantling the forks I discovered several problems:- 1) left fork leg is bent 2) left damper valve circlip incorrectly fitted jamming the valve 3) right...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Progress update.....erm, a little slow as life is getting in the way. I had to rider longer bolts for the bottom 2 gearbox to adaptor plate positions as the 5 speeder seems to be a little wider, now arrived and fitted. The teeny tiny radiator arrived and has been lashed into place. https://i.imgur.c...

I'm pretty sure we busted the speed limit on several occasions, especially those downhill twisties with luggage/gravity assistance.

I'm defo. a fan of this new French speed limit thing, along with the continental 80kph truck speed limit on motorways - perfect. :D

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Coach, you are perfectly correct on both counts. The engine is a stressed member so forms the lower part of the frame, not dangling from the head though as I thought this would not be a good engineering solution but through the cast iron block. I should really move this to a build section of the for...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

I have little progress to report; a combination of rolling around Europe on the original Sluggy and a lot of head scratching around the front engine mounting has combined to delay progress. So after much internal deliberation I have decided to dangle the front of the motor from an upper engine block...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Perfectly correct Sam. Knowing that I can’t oil bath this one it’s going to have a drip feed system, one line to the clutch bearing and another to the old ‘paintbrush with a hole drilled through’ chain wiper. I have no doubt it won’t last too long but at least Indian Enfield parts are cheap and avai...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Not much progress to report as I’m busy prepping for the grand euro tour. Still, I have finalised the sprocket to flywheel connections with high tensile cap head bolts. The holes in the sprocket are not evenly spaced and I suspect this is to ensure the flywheel is mounted correctly so it can only be...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Hi Sam, and thanks for the warning. The duplex primary is the original Enfield version, I usually get around 80,000 from them on the 400cc single so I’m hoping the 500 twin (being only 250cc pulses each cylinder). After the first chain wore out I switched to a Cush drive clutch and this seems to mak...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

Certainly, but.... My intention is to use the minimum of machine tools so it can be replicated by someone with minimum facilities. So far all that has been required is a hacksaw, grinder and a pillar drill along with the usual spanner’s screwdrivers and sockets. The motor is supported on a wooden ho...

Re: Could this be the start if Sluggy II?

So this is how the primary will look when the longer bolts arrive and it does look like the 12mm flanged he'd heads would clear the primary chain when it wraps around the primary sprocket.
